Mr. Jeff Warren, Band Director


The Churchland High School Band is into its third year under the tutelege of Mr. Jeff Warren. Warren is a native of Virginia Beach where he began his musical career on the French Horn at the age of 10. He attended Kellam High School where he held the All Virginia Band 1st chair from 1987-1988.

Mr. Warren was a member of the 9 time World Champion Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps from 1989 to 1991. He then began teaching and instructing marching bands throughout the Hampton Roads area. Shortly thereafter, he attended Virginia Commonwealth University and studied music education.

After college, Mr. Warren decided to pursue a career in French Horn performance. He began studying with Kendall Betts of the Minnesota Orchestra and became a staff member of the Kendall Betts Horn Camp, a summer workshop for horn players in the Mountains of New Hampshire. There he studied the horn with some of the great hornists in the world including James Thatcher; Hollywood’s leading studio artist, David Ohanian of the Canadian Brass, Martin Hackelmann of the National Symphony Orchestra and Michael Hatfield from Indiana University. Mr. Warren has also participated in masterclasses with world renowned soloists such as Barry Tuckwell, Hermann Baumann and Dale Clevenger of the Chicago Symphony.

In 1996 Mr. Warren was chosen as the Assistant Principal Horn of the Charlotte Symphony in North Carolina where he performed until 1999. He then moved back to the Hampton Roads area and began performing regularly with the Virginia Symphony, the Richmond Symphony, Virginia Opera and the Williamsburg Sinfonia. He has also played with the North Carolina Symphony and was a guest artists with the North Country Chamber Players in New Hampshire. Among the artists that Mr. Warren has performed with, the list includes Ray Charles, Tony Bennet, YES, The Irish Tenors, Herbie Hancock, Marvin Hamlisch, Doc Severnson as well as Broadway at Chrysler Hall.

Mr. Warren began his teaching career at Churchland High School in 2005 and continues to balance his teaching career with a busy schedule of performing. He has also auditioned for many of the nation’s top symphony orchestras during his career as a hornist. His hobbies include mountain biking, hockey, attending live concerts and practicing his horn. Jeff Warren resides in Virginia Beach with his wife Michelle and son Zackary.
